Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull has accused Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon of "remarkable incompetence" in his handling of an ongoing SAS pay scandal.
The Defence Force accidentally overpaid some SAS soldiers because of changes to its computer system and has now started docking the troops' pay to recover the money.
The Opposition says it has evidence that at least one serving member of the regiment has been handed a zero-dollar pay cheque and has described the affair as a "national scandal".
This morning Mr Turnbull joined the attack on Mr Fitzgibbon's handling of the affair and urged Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to reconsider the minister's future.
"It is a remarkable display of incompetence, the idea that men could be fighting in Afghanistan, taking on the most dangerous enemy in the world, and have nothing in their pay packets," Mr Turnbull said.
"They have been having their pay docked to a point where they are unable to pay the mortgages on their homes.
"To have their wives anxious about whether they are going to lose their houses - it's an incredible situation."
"It is an incredible scandal. Incredible because it is almost impossible to believe that a minister can be so incompetent."
Four months ago Mr Fitzgibbon told Parliament he would resolve the issue, but several soldiers say they are still out of pocket.
Chief of Defence Force Angus Houston has told a Senate committee the matter is being fixed.
"I would like to assure the committee that during the remediation period, no soldier is to be financially disadvantaged," he said.
Chief of the Army Ken Gillespie has promised that any money already docked from soldiers' wages will be repaid.
